setting things? Or do we want to make it all "magic"?

The one thing in the favour of the current approach is that it is
simple. We could put all kinds of logic in there to make it all more
magic but I'm reluctant to do so. The git recipe S thing has bothered
me for a long time but the question is what it should do instead?
